Problems Of Foot

Foot troubles occur mostly due to bad fitting footwear. If noticed early these troubles can be corrected.

Damage of Skin

i) Blister
Occurs due to friction between the skin and the shoe lining. This results in the formation of fluid between the layers of skin.

Remedy: An adhesive tape with zinc oxide ointment may provide relief.
ii) Callus
Due to excess pressure, the skin becomes hard at the heal area and causes pain.

Remedy: The shoe is provided with a cushioned sock lining or contoured moulded sock lining or a suitable footbed.
iii) Corn
This is cone shaped overgrowth produced by friction or pressure usually over toe joints. The epidermis hardens.

Remedy: Affected portions are usually covered by placing synthetic tubular foam or silicon rubber pads. In case of corns between toes, careful application of specified concentration of silver nitrate can help. Toes are held apart by synthetic foam material.
Note: Epidermis is the outer layer of skin. Dermis is the layer below the epidermis.

Trouble of Toes

Most of the deformities of the joints at the toe are caused by footwear that has insufficient space at the end and the sides of the toes or by footwear that allows the foot to slide forward.
The common toe problems are:

i)   Hallux Vallgus
ii)  Hallux Rigidus
iii) Hammer Toe
iv) Clawed Toe
v)  Mallet Toe

Trouble of the Foot Arches

Metatarsalgia
Pain under metatarsa] heads may he caused by dropping of the heads of the central metatarsals. This is often caused by over loading of forepart of foot e.g. by wearing higher heels than one is accustomed to. Wearing narrow shoes cramping the metatars heads. For relief, a shoe with a flexible forepart with lining can be used.

Flat Foot/Pes Planus

The inner longitudinal arch feattens caused by the foot having to bear extra weight, ie. after it long illness or pregnancy or long hours of standing or prolonged walking. For this problem special orthopedic shots are required.

Humped Foot/Pes Cavus
The longitudinal arches are high with the arch visible on the outside of the foot, increasing the weight home by the forepart. For this problem shoes with the high waist, general instep girth and cushioning under the arch are required.

Valgus ankle and Pronation
The back of the foot tilts inwards so that the weight is borne on the flattened inner longitudinal arch and the spreading forepart.

In case of any serious or chronic problem please consult specialist

Keep in Mind

1. Be occasion specific while opting for a shoe. For example don’t wear formal shoes during rainy season.
2. While wearing closed shoes, use a shoe horn. A shoe horn prevents the back counter from getting crushed.
3. While wearing shoes with laces, make sure while putting on the shoes the laces are sufficiently loose.
4. In case of sandals with buckles, the straps should be opened from the buckles.
5. Shoes should be cleaned and maintained at regular intervals. For that appropriate cleaners and polishes should be used.
6. Shoes should not be worn continuously. They should be given rest after a certain period of wear. This is because when we wear the shoes we have heat and perspiration generated inside the shoes. If this is not allowed to dry, then bacteria may develop inside the shoes from the perspiration, which will harm the shoe materials and cause foot health problem.
